                            THE VOICE OF GOD

                                   [for Martin Lucas]

she is singing that 'Agnus Dei' by Bach: and I weep with agony and joy, rapt in this one great sacred moment: and I hear the poem in her voice, its raw sad beauty: for this is metamorphosis, her song emerging from the chrysalis of time, as though sorrow were floating in her throat like a butterfly with wings of fire: and she sings the constellation of the heart breaking, her voice atomic, transforming us all with the astronomy of being...

once a choir-boy, later a haiku poet, he too wept on hearing this aria, which expressed the soul of the whole world, wounded and exalted, wounded and exalted, like his own heart, like his own heart:

                                   there on an island
                                   emerging from the mist
                                   a deer trembles
with the beauty of the morning
dew still glistening in its eyes
