MAGIAGI, UPOLU*

Tonight, as effortlessly I write,
the cat licks the bowl clean. I've always been able to compose
with ease in the Pacific. It's inspired me to be prolific.
The heat alleviates my pain, and you are near.
Back in the West, my soul would freeze like my laptop,
and I'd become another silent witness
to society's death throes or stop
caring entirely. It's elemental here!
All I need to do is

arise
in the morning
pick poems
from the trees
like ripe mangoes

*Village in Western Samoa.
